New in the 2022 Omnichannel Retail Index is the analysis of the adoption of sustainability practices and programs. As shoppers increasingly demand transparency around how retailers and brands are responding to climate change and giving back where possible, the index reveals varying degrees of initiatives.
Although it is hard to measure the actual success and impact of these programs, it is a step in the right direction. As brands and retailers align their strategic goals with sustainability, expect recommerce to continue to take off in different formats.
Two of the fastest-rising personal values in the US are preserving the environment (rising fastest among Gen Z) and being in tune with nature (rising fastest among Millennials and Gen X)*. This is strongly validated by 64% of Americans who agree that it is important that companies take environmentally responsible actions, such as using environmentally friendly materials or ingredients; this attitude is most popular among Boomers (70%) and Gen Xers (68%)*. 31% of Americans take environmental protection into consideration when making purchase decisions all or most of the time; this behavior is led by Gen Z (33%) and Millennials (44%)*.
