Sustainability Comes in Different Degrees

Retailers and brands care about the earth — just like their customers do! Sustainability efforts caught the attention of our mystery shoppers while shopping 115 retail websites for the 2022 Omnichannel Retail Index report.

Our shoppers found many efforts, both big and small. Some were as simple as using badges to call out a “conscious choice.” Some offered filters to sort by responsible leather, fair trade or organic materials. And others provided complete manifestos detailing the brand’s commitment to sustainability.

Here are some examples:

American Eagle and Aerie offer the Give Back Box. Shoppers can print out a free shipping label and fill a box with gently used clothes, shoes, and accessories. All donations are distributed to local charities to help people in need.

Like many others, Express offers a rental clothing option for its fashionistas. For a monthly fee, customers can select three items, keep them for as long as they want, ship them back, and exchange each for another item. Customers can stay on top of trends without discarding clothing in the trash.

Sunglass Hut was noted for being environmentally thoughtful and offering Green Delivery. The green shipping option is fulfilled by logistics providers using sustainable solutions to reduce climate impact. The providers calculate carbon emissions from pickup to delivery. The carbon emissions are then offset through climate protection projects, including reforestation, renewable energy, waste disposal, wind power, and others supported by the logistics providers.

The e.l.f. Cares section of the e.l.f. Cosmetics site states that “from February 2019 to date, ‘Project Unicorn’ has eliminated 1 MILLION pounds of excess waste. We continue to work like mad scientists to strip down our packaging to next to nothing, covering only what we have to. It’s one step forward on our path to reducing our packaging footprint.”

Finally, Dick’s Sporting Goods, H&M, and Qurate Retail Group have detailed sections on their site outlining their sustainability goals. H&M has sustainability listed on its header. When clicked, it links to multiple sustainable efforts, including a 2021 Sustainability Disclosure Report for customers to download.

Cheers to all the retailers and brands who have sustainability on the radar. Whether big or small, every effort can make a difference for the planet we share.
