A Scalable, Flexible Headless Solution

The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, described as “the world’s first business school,” has been open since 1881. Today, Wharton is regarded as one of the world’s top institutions for business education and has more than 99,000 alums from 153 countries.

Wharton Interactive wanted to quickly scale the delivery of its cutting-edge alternate reality course (ARC) games. This required landing on a solution that would tightly integrate a complex set of ecommerce customer journeys and a number of different technology stacks. The Wharton Interactive team had a clear vision about what they wanted to build, but needed the right technology experts to make their vision a reality.

OSF developed a headless commerce solution on its Salesforce Commerce Cloud platform, enabling the back end to run on Commerce Cloud and the front end to run separately. This headless system, driven by APIs, gives Wharton the flexibility to easily connect progressive web apps and other technologies as Wharton Interactive grows. We also created automated end-to-end journeys for both students and faculty, and we aligned and automated service and marketing processes.

New transactional customer service features and functionality:

  • Self-service for educators
  • Course creation
  • Coupon codes
  • Order changes/cancellations
  • Self-service for students
  • Game purchases
  • Earned certifications are automatically linked to the student’s LinkedIn profile
  • Course sign-ups
  • Refunds
  • SSO between Wharton Interactive and gaming platforms
